On July 22, Robert and Lillian Smalls were named the South Carolina Parents of the Year by the Columbia-based organization Parents’ Day Council of South Carolina in honor of National Parents’ Day! The Smalls family has been licensed to provide foster care with Lutheran Services Carolinas for 20 years. Recently retired from fostering, they have adopted three children and are in the process of adopting their fourth.
In an article featuring the two honorees in the Charleston Chronicle, Lillian stated, “I have always loved having children around me, so it was natural to incorporate the foster parent program into our lives once our own children were grown. My husband and I never thought about receiving such an honor just because we took in children and tried to give them a loving home in which to live.”
This dedicated couple has provided love, nurturing, and patience to all the children who have been in their care, and they are very deserving of this honor, which included a plaque, a Proclamation from the Governor’s Office, as well as a Proclamation from Mayor Tecklenburg proclaiming July 22, 2018, as Robert and Lillian Smalls Day in the City of Charleston. Thank you, Robert and Lillian, for the positive impact you have made on so many lives!
